7 tips to make the most out of your startup internship

Are you planning on doing an internship in the future? Hear from 7 interns who worked at Neat this summer on their tips for making the most of your startup internship.

1. Take initiative

Firstly, volunteer for additional work and projects if you have completed your assignments in order to acquire new skills and learn more.

“If your supervisor doesn’t have anything for you, you can always think outside of the box and figure out ways to achieve your original assignments more efficiently!” – Tiffany Yau, Operations

2. Apply your course learnings

Try and use the skills and knowledge you’ve learnt at school creatively in your work – especially at a startup, you may be lucky enough to have the freedom to complete your tasks however you want.

“Helping out with financial bookkeeping, I managed to automate 1700 transactions using R, a data analysis software I had learnt to use in a machine learning class!” – Archie Wiranata, Finance

3. Learn about different parts of the business

Don’t be afraid to ask your supervisor about topics not directly related to the project you’re currently working on. In other words, broaden your horizons and get a variety of perspectives.

“Although my internship was focused on content marketing, I was really curious about Facebook Ads and asked my supervisor for insights. She had a lot of valuable knowledge to share!” – Saumya Mathur, Marketing

4. Ask for feedback

Furthermore, even though it can be intimidating to go up to your boss and present your work to them, always ask for feedback because the team will have a lot of knowledge to share. Ultimately, this is one of the best ways to learn.

“By asking for feedback, you do not only end up with better work, but you also build relationships within the office.” – Bhaveshsai Kumar, Business Development

5. Takes notes

Similarly, take notes on what you learn during the internship. It helps you complete your daily work, set goals, and reflect on your internship experience at the end. In addition, it is a good practice to adopt for full-time work too.

“Taking notes during my online accounting tasks allowed me to look back at the different formulas and steps without having to repeatedly ask my supervisor.” – Karina Lai, Finance

6. Balance learning & adding value

Find a balance between learning new skills and using the skills you already have. This will help you get the most out of your internship and add value to the company.

“Getting used to a new code base and learning on the job was an integral part of my journey. I identified potential room for improvement and attempted to automate manual processes.” – Viren Mohindra, Software Engineering

7. Socialise with the team

In conclusion, engage in casual non-work related conversations and participate in after work activities to build a relationship with your coworkers.

“We always have a lot of social activities at Neat, like lunches and happy hours. Some of the best relationships I built with those in other departments were made outside of work hours.” – Comax Lau, Customer Support
